Additional information

Canadian and European institutions have long-standing collaborations in student mobility, research partnerships and academic exchange. In recent years, cooperation has intensified through initiatives such as Erasmus+ and Canada's association to Horizon Europe, creating new opportunities for joint research projects, innovation partnerships and academic collaboration between European and Canadian institutions. The strategic importance of the relationship is reflected in the broader EU-Canada partnership agenda. The EU and Canada continue to strengthen cooperation in areas including research, innovation, skills development and higher education, with these themes featuring prominently in bilateral discussions and summit meetings.

Canada has a highly decentralised higher education system. Unlike most European countries, there is no federal ministry of education governing higher education nationwide. Instead, responsibility for education lies with Canada's 10 provinces and 3 territories, which regulate universities, colleges and quality assurance within their own jurisdictions.

The Canadian higher education sector comprises:

  • Approximately 100 public universities
  • More than 180 publicly funded colleges and institutes
  • A smaller number of private universities and private career colleges, whose size and recognition vary by province
  • More than 2 million post-secondary students enrolled across universities and colleges
